Record-Breaking Rainfall Hits UAE, Disrupts Flights
UAE hit by record rainfall…
The UAE experienced its heaviest rainfall in 75 years, causing chaos across the country and significant disruptions at airports.
In Al Ain’s Khatm Al Shakla area, a whopping 254.8mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours, breaking records since data collection began in 1949. This heavy rain happened because of unstable weather linked to a ‘low surface pressure’ system.
The downpour flooded runways and blocked roads, severely affecting airports like Dubai International Airport (DXB). Passengers were advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport, with Emirates even suspending check-ins due to operational challenges caused by the extreme weather.
Flydubai cancelled all flights departing from Dubai until 10 am the following day, offering affected passengers full refunds. Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi also faced disruptions, with flights experiencing three to four-hour delays.
Though the rain might boost the UAE’s yearly rainfall and groundwater, it caused big problems for travelers, showing how important it is to be ready for extreme weather.
